With slick conditions and busy roads for holiday travel, area parents are reminded to make sure their car seats for children are properly installed. Katrina Altenhofen, who helped start Iowa’s passenger safety seat certification program, says anyone under the age of three should still be rear facing if possible. Also, during the winter she says, children should not have their coats on when they’re buckled into car seats because the bulk leaves too much room between the child and the safety straps. Parents should buckle kids into their car seats and then put blankets or their coat on top of them once they’re strapped in. She recommends putting the coat on backwards to help keep it on.
