If you received a drone for Christmas, do you know what the rules are for flying it? Tim McClung with the Iowa Department of Transportation tells KCII News there are regulations in place for operating drones. He says the rules are there for safety and to protect privacy, “There are some rules to the road, and basically those are to always stay below 400 feet and within visual line of sight of the aircraft.”

He also says drones must stay away from airports so as to not interfere with their operations. Don’t fly over groups of people or emergency responders, and never fly under the influence of alcohol. He adds it’s also important to register your unmanned aircraft if it weighs more than 0.55 pounds and it’s the operator’s responsibility to do so.
