The City of Sigourney is in the midst of installing a new tornado siren system, and they are hoping to have it tested by early next week. Sigourney Police Chief Allan Glandon said they have purchased two new sirens to add to their existing one. Due to the size and geographic makeup of the city, one siren was no longer sufficient. The two new sirens will be placed by the city’s water tower and near the elementary school at the corner of Jefferson and Hickory Streets. The existing siren is being relocated near the sewer lagoon on the east side of the city.

Construction to erect the new sirens began Tuesday, though the construction company has not given the city a specific time when the project will be complete. Glandon estimates they will test the new system some time next week. The funds for the project were supplied by state and federal grants, as well as some money from local funds. Glandon warns the new system will sound different from the old one. The tones will come from a different direction than people are used to, and the new sirens are electromechanical while the old one is electronic.
