An SUV and semi collided near Lone Tree Wednesday morning leaving one person dead and two people injured. According to the Iowa State Patrol, at 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 22 and Wapsi Avenue, a Kia Sorento driven by 35-year-old Eangano Hamisi of North Liberty was stopped facing southbound. A semi driven by 28-year-old Derek K. Kriegel of Chelsea was traveling eastbound on Highway 22 when the Kia proceeded into the intersection and the semi was unable to avoid the SUV. The semi struck the Kia broadside on the passenger-side and the SUV came to rest in the south ditch.
Hamisi was wearing a seatbelt and was transported by ambulance and 27-year-old Bahaiti Kasongo of Coralville was taken by helicopter to the University of Iowa Hospitals. Thirty-one-year-old Barthelemy Elson of Coralville was not wearing a seatbelt and died.
The Lone Tree Fire Department, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement and the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office all responded to the scene.
