Arrows will be flying across the Washington High School gymnasium today. Over 500 archers from 13 schools are competing in the first meet hosted by the Washington archery teams this winter.

The elementary field consists of shooters from Cardinal, Center Point-Urbana, and Mount Vernon. The middle school and high school groups feature archers from the same three schools, as well as Albia and Solon. The event begins at 8 a.m. and Washington high school archery coach Liz Goodwin expects the event to last until 6 p.m. with Washington shooters competing throughout the day.

The Washington archers began their season last Saturday at the Ottumwa Bulldogs Archery Tournament. The middle school team took first place honors with a score of 3,201. The high school and elementary squads placed third. The Demon high schoolers tallied 3,240 points, while the elementary team recorded a mark of 2,007.
