De-appropriations passed the Iowa Senate and the bill is now going to the House for consideration. The bill cuts $3 million from community colleges, $3 million from the judicial branch, $4.5 million from the department of education, $8 million from the University of Iowa and Iowa State University each, $2 million from the University of Northern Iowa, $3.8 million from the Department of Human Services, $2 million from public health, $1 million from public safety, and proposes a cut from the department of corrections of $5.5 million.

Senator Kevin Kinney (D) who voted against the measure says, “I would hate to be working in the corrections institutions. They’re stretched so thin and they’re working with some of the most volatile people that we have in the state of Iowa. … We’re just putting them in a very precarious situation.” He adds if these cuts pass, they’ll likely affect Iowa for a long time moving forward, not only this fiscal year.

The bill passed the Senate 28-19. Find the full list of cuts click here.
