Arrows flew across the Washington Middle School Saturday as the Demon Archery teams hosted their second shoot of the season. Archers from Cedar Rapids Prairie Point, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Ottumwa, and Springville made the trip to Washington for the event. The Demon archers earned first place honors in all three divisions.

The Washington High School team shot a score of 3,291. Springville placed second with a score of 3,164, 127 points behind the Demons. The Washington High Schoolers recorded four of the five best performances including the top two girls marks. Samantha Mellinger recorded the highest score in program history and won her second straight tournament with 292 out of a possible 300 points. Washington’s Grace Shafer posted a second-place finish in the high school girls’ division and third overall with a score of 289. Mellinger and Shafer both tallied 22 bullseyes. Mitchell Driscoll had the best high school boys’ result for Washington with a 282, placing fourth overall. Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont’s Alex Brittain posted a score of 291, winning the high school boys division.

The Washington Middle School squad bested Ottumwa’s Evans Middle School for first place, 3,200-3,045. Bryan Martin had the best middle school boys result with 280 points. Washington’s Lincoln Elementary team defeated Ottumwa’s Liberty Elementary School squad, 2,538-2,096. Lincoln’s Makynna Morgan topped the 31-person elementary girls’ division with a score of 249.

The Washington archery teams continue their season Saturday at the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 3D Archery Tournament. First flights are set for 8 a.m. at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont High School.
