The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams hosted Tipton Tuesday night at Tim Grady Gymnasium in a River Valley Conference doubleheader.

The Golden Hawk girls survived Tipton, winning their seventh game in a row 43-41 in overtime. Mid-Prairie led early, up 10-7 after one quarter  and 17-13 at the half. In the second half the Hawks stretched the lead to 10 before Tipton answered with an 11-1 run to tie the game midway through the fourth.

On Mid-Prairie’s final possession of regulation, trailing by one, Shae Becker gathered in an offensive rebound and was fouled with just 1.6 seconds on the clock. She converted the second of two free throws to send the game to overtime. In the extra period Tipton scored the first three, but Ali Butters answered for the Hawks with fourth straight to give Mid-Prairie the lead 40-39. Anna Vilovchik added a layup to stretch the lead to three. Tipton’s Zoe Rezac was fouled with a minute to go, giving her a chance to tie the game with a three point play. She missed the free throw, Addie Rath hit one of two free throws to put the Hawks up two with five seconds left and Tipton’s desperation heave at the buzzer was wide left giving the Hawks the win. Mid-Prairie was led by Ali Butters with 16 points, Addie Rath and Shae Becker each had 11. With the win the Mid-Prairie girls are now 8-3 on the year.

The Golden Hawk boys dropped their contest with Tipton 74-68. The Hawks came out hot early, knocking down three first quarter three point goals to open a 15-6 lead. The Tigers countered in the second quarter behind Logan Hoffman. The River Valley Conference’s second leading scorer put up 17 points in the second frame alone and finished with a game high 37 and the Tigers led 39-34 at the half. Hoffman poured in 11 more in the third quarter to help the Tigers stretch their lead to seven going to the fourth. Mid-Prairie opened the final frame on a 13-2 run to take a five point lead with five minutes remaining. Mid-Prairie would still lead 68-67 with just two minutes to go but the Tigers closed with a 7-0 run to secure the win.

The Golden Hawks were led on the night by 17 points from Derek Rich. Caleb Statler had 16, Carter Reinier added 13 and Tom Butters 10. With the loss Mid-Prairie falls to 3-8 on the season.
