Two area girls’ basketball teams will have an extra couple of days to prepare for their postseason run. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) revealed the regional brackets for Class 1A through 3A Monday. In Class 2A Region 8, the Highland Huskies (14-2) and the Sigourney Savages (14-3/13-4) received one of the bracket’s top four seeds, avoiding a first round matchup on February 11. Central Decatur and Pekin also earned first round byes. The teams taking part in the opening round includes Cardinal (1-14), Columbus (8-7), Danville (9-7), Martensdale St. Marys (7-7), Mediapolis (10-5), Pleasantville (3-11), Van Buren (11-4), and Wapello (9-7).

Highland received the regional’s second seed after winning 14 of their first 15 games. The Huskies lost last night against the Pekin Panthers (13-3), 44-30. Highland will open their postseason run on Valentine’s Day, hosting the winner of Danville and Columbus. The Huskies bested Columbus in two Southeast Iowa Super Conference games by an average of 20.5 points. Highland defeated Danville, 43-35, on the road last Thursday.

Sigourney was issued the bracket’s third seed after posting 13 victories in their first 16 games. They will face the winner of Mediapolis and Wapello in Sigourney on February 14. The Savages haven’t faced either team this season. Should Highland and Sigourney win their quarterfinal matchups, the teams would battle in the semifinal round on February 17 at Highland High School. The regional championship will be held February 20 at Albia High School.
