As the current state legislative session continues, local representatives are beginning to focus on some of the issues they feel strongly about. State Representative Jarad Klein (R) says one of the topics he’s spending a lot of time on involves extraterritorial zoning. Klein is fighting for the voting rights of people who find themselves in extraterritorial zones. He explains, “If a city decides to extraterritorial zone to two and a half miles out, if you live in that two and a half miles, even if you’re outside the city limits, it’s my opinion that you ought to have a vote in that election. If they can zone you and control you, you ought to at least have a vote.”

In addition to the zoning laws, Klein is also working with legislation regarding bonding. He’s attempting to make it so landowners have some say when it comes to bond referendums they’ll be paying for, because currently, people have to live within city limits to get a say on bonding. Klein isn’t sure how either of the zoning issues will play out, but he wanted to make sure people affected by it know he’s in their corner.
