PAWS & More in Washington saw an increase in animal intake in 2016 with 799 animals being received. That’s up over 100 from 2015, when 695 animals came into the local shelter. Last year, the shelter’s adoption rate was 87%. Amber Talbot, director of the shelter, recently spoke with the Washington County Board of Supervisors meeting, and explained they only had one litter of puppies come in from the county last year and the juvenile offspring of dogs is significantly less. They do 20-30 public surgeries each month through the low cost spay and neuter clinic.

In regards to funding, Talbot explained they use a formula and they’re asking the county to fund $29,170. The formula is the number of animals accepted from the county only, multiplied by the average daily boarding fee of $15 per day, multiplied by the first seven days the animals is at the shelter, as that is the state required holding time for an impounded animal. So the formula was 266 county animals last year, times the $15 fee times the seven days, plus the $1,240 reimbursement fee for the 31 pick ups the shelter did. The pick ups are $40 per call.

President of the PAWS & More board Sheila Hanson invited the supervisors to visit the facility.
