A senior on the No. 5 Washington wrestling team (17-0) is the latest member of the program’s 100 win club. Karlton Skubal (195) reached the milestone during last weekend’s Gary Curtis Invitational at Highland High School. He entered the tournament with 98 varsity wins under his belt.

The 99th victory of Skubal’s career came in the quarterfinal round versus South Tama’s Cael Kellogg. He pinned Kellogg 1:09 into their match. Skubal’s 100th win came in the semifinal round against Tri-County’s Clay Harper. The match went into overtime where Skubal was able to grind out a sudden victory, 6-4. He suffered his first loss of the season in the championship match against Class 2A No. 1 Bryce Esmoil of West Liberty. Esmoil brought Skubal to his back with 52 seconds left in their grapple.

Skubal became the third Washington wrestler this winter to reach 100 career wins, following Andrew Waite (138) and Austin Hazelett (145). Joining Kyle Anderson (126) and Trey Van Weelden (152) as current wrestlers with 100 or more varsity victories.Skubal is graded as the No. 5 wrestler in Class 2A by IAwrestle and The Predicament.
