A road trip to Lee County last night rendered a doubleheader split for the Washington Demon basketball teams. As heard live on KCII FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, the Demons traveled to Fort Madison High School for a pair of Southeast Conference games against the Bloodhounds.

The girls’ game featured five ties and eight lead changes, with the outcome decided in the final possession. Trailing 46-43, Fort Madison’s (3-5) Anna Kester missed a game tying three as time expired to give Washington (2-6) the victory. The game was tied at 22 at halftime. Washington outscored Fort Madison, 20-6, in the third quarter for a 42-28 advantage entering the fourth quarter. Fort Madison held Washington to four points in the final eight minutes, while the Bloodhounds added 15. Sarah Nacos scored a team-high 14 points, while Morgan Brinning added 10. The win snaps Washington’s six-game losing streak, improving their overall record to 2-6.

A slow start in the boys’ game kept Washington from pulling off a doubleheader sweep. Fort Madison (6-2) opened the game on an 15-2 run and led 22-7 at the end of eight minutes. The Demons outscored the Bloodhounds, 52-49, in the final 24 minutes to fall, 72-59. Ten players recorded at least two points, and six players had six or more points. Bryce Sinn and Jaivonn Willis tied for the team lead with 10 points apiece. The loss drops Washington’s record to 1-5 overall.
