The competition week begins tonight on the road for the Washington Demon basketball teams. The Demon boys’ and girls’ squads will look to return to winning form when they travel to Ottumwa for a non-conference doubleheader versus the Bulldogs.

A lopsided fourth quarter caused the latest setback for the Washington Demon boys’ basketball team (3-8) Friday. The Demons were outscored 27-10 in the final quarter of a 62-56 loss to the Fairfield Trojans (4-7). The contest featured 11 lead changes and was tied five times. Washington held a 46-35 advantage at the end of the third quarter. Fairfield converted 11 of 13 free-throw attempts in the final eight minutes.Jaivonn Willis and Cale Hobschedit paced Washington’s scoring with 11 points apiece. Ottumwa (3-11) enters tonight’s contest off back-to-back victories. Andrew Curran is the Bulldog’s’ leading scorer with 145 points. Ottumwa’s Noah Boyer has tallied a team-best 85 rebounds and 18 blocks. Ottumwa defeated Washington in last year’s meeting, 58-39.

Pressure defense forced the Washington girls’ basketball team (3-9) in 28 turnovers Friday in a 52-32 setback to No. 14 Fairfield (10-4). Washington’s Sarah Nacos scored 10 of her team-best 16 points in the final quarter.. Ottumwa (8-8) comes into the game tonight winning six of their last nine games. Kacy Nickerson leads Ottumwa with 192 points Lily Anderson tops the Bulldogs with 108 rebounds and 26 steals. Ottumwa won last year’s contest versus Washington, 57-45.
