A week layoff didn’t affect the No. 5 Washington Demon wrestling team (25-0). The Demon wrestlers put their unblemished dual record to the test Saturday at the East Marshall Dual tournament. Washington, the reigning tournament champion, remains undefeated in dual competition.

The Demons were in a pool with Beckman Catholic, Union La Porte City, and South Tama. Washington opened the tournament with four wins by fall, a major decision, a decision, and three forfeits in a 49-30 victory over Beckman Catholic. Walker Ikerd (106), Kyle Anderson (126), Colin Murphy (182), and Mitchell Huisenga (285) posted pinfall victories. The Demons continued with four pins, three wins by decision, and four forfeits in a 57-12 triumph over Union La Porte City. Anderson (126), Alex Latcham (132), Andrew Waite (138), and Tristin Westphal-Edwards (160) tallied wins by fall. Washington closed pool play with three pinfall victories, one decision win, and three forfeits to edge South Tama, 39-33. Westphal-Edwards (160), Skubal (195), and Huisenga (285) recorded pins.

The tournament semifinals saw Washington square off against Sigourney-Keota (21-4). The Demons posted six pinfalls, two major decisions, and three decision victories in a 53-16 victory. Sigourney-Keota scored points on a pin by Noah Reeve, a major decision, and a forefeit. Garrett Ikerd (113), Dillan Sanders (120), Anderson (126), Waite (138), Westphal-Edwards (160), and Huisenga (285) brought their opponents to their back.

Washington grappled the Independence Mustangs in the championship. Washington scored six pinfalls, one major decision, and three forfeits to claim the championship, 58-18. Anderson (126), Latcham (132), Logan Escher (170), Skubal (195), Tanner Murphy (220), and Huisenga (285) pinned their opponents. Independence bested Washington in last year’s fifth place match at state duals, 34-24.

Sigourney-Keota finished the tournament in fourth place after losing to South Tama in the consolation bracket, 40-39.

The Demon wrestlers continue their dual season Thursday in a quadrangular against Keokuk, Oskaloosa, and Williamsburg. First grapples will commence at 5:30 p.m. at Oskaloosa High School.

Sigourney-Keota’s dual record is 21-4 after the weekend. They will return to the mat tonight in a non-conference quadrangular against Mid-Prairie, Montezuma, and Pekin. First matches are set for 6 p.m. at Sigourney High School.
