Twenty-five people have died in Iowa with influenza-related illness since October 2, 2016. Eleven of those deaths happened the last week of January, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. All 25 who died were over the age of 61. Influenza in Iowa is moderate and widespread. Also, 15 schools in the state reported 10% or greater absence due to illness last week, one in Washington County, two in Keokuk County, two in Jefferson County and one in Louisa County. To help prevent the spread of influenza remember the three Cs – cover your cough and sneezes; clean your hands regularly with hot soapy water; and contain germs by staying home from work or school when ill.
