Drought conditions have worsened in Iowa since last week, with nearly 14% of the state now considered abnormally dry. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, the abnormally dry portion is in southeast and south central Iowa, including most of Washington County. State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says much of the area was quite dry during 2016, with some sections having the driest year since 1988. He adds, there are concerns of things getting too dry, as the winter has also been dry with below average precipitation. There is a chance for snow and rain this weekend and into early next week.
