Several area wrestlers will compete for a state championship starting today in Des Moines. The 2017 Iowa State Individual Wrestling tournament will run through Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in three classes and features 224 wrestlers battling for 14 weight class titles.

The Columbus Wildcats have two wrestlers competing in the Class 2A tournament at 6 p.m. Jarod Kadel (106) starts the tournament facing Pocahontas Area’s Jacob Mielke. Tucker Morrison (170) opens against Saydel’s Devon Van Houten.

Five local wrestlers will begin their battle for a Class 1A state title at 1 p.m. Sigourney-Keota has three wrestlers in the tournament. Mason Dye (106) begins his first trip to state against Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto’s Bryce Kafton. Kaleb Reeves (195) gets his state run started against Panorama’s Dalton Holmes. Noah Boender begins his final state-run against Dike-New Hartford’s Ethan Huntington. WACO’s Cody Crawford (285) will face Jesup’s Brian Sadler in the first round. Highland’s Cory Stewart (132) opens against Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire’s Kolton Roth.
