Since 2006, Iowa’s number of Community Supported Agriculture programs has increased by about 62%. According to Iowa Secretary of Agriculture there are now more than 80 CSAs across the state. CSAs provide fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables to customers. The way it works – farmers sell subscriptions to a box of fresh produce which are then delivered to the subscribers or pickup sites on a regular basis, weekly or bi-weekly. The boxes offer a variety of food depending on the specific CSA program, and may include fruits, vegetables, eggs, baked goods, herbs and honey. By signing up for the subscription, members get a portion of the harvest and share in the abundance of a good growing year as well as the lower quantities during difficult growing conditions. Northey says now is a good time to consider joining a local CSA.
