The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has become aware of a scam currently being performed in their name, and they warn people to not be fooled. According to the sheriff’s office, people have been receiving calls or messages from a person identifying themselves as a sheriff’s deputy. The recipient is informed they have missed jury duty, or they have a warrant out for their arrest. They are given the option of either paying the fine or turning themselves in at the jail. The victims are then directed to a place where money transfers can be facilitated, such as Wal-Mart or CVS.

While the sheriff’s office admits the scam is convincing, they assure the public the calls are false, and they would never collect bonds or fines in this manner. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has put out similar warnings concerning phone scams such as this in the past. They say the scams seem to resurface with a different twist, and it usually ends up with people losing money. People who receive a call like this are reminded to not provide any money or personal information, but should instead contact a local law enforcement agency to file a report.
