The City of Kalona recently met in a work session with the Washington County Board of Supervisors regarding funding for the new Kalona community center project. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh felt the meeting went well, “We had a good discussion with them on our Enhance Iowa application. We’re hopeful that we can receive some funding that’s going to help assist our grant application when we go back to Des Moines and the Enhance Iowa Board on March 8th.”

When they meet with the Enhance Iowa Board, the city hopes to have their current cost figure revised to reflect some of the design changes the city council and community center committee supported. Schlabaugh is hopeful they will get a contract awarded after the meeting, which will move the project forward to the bid phase. If all goes according to plan, Schlabaugh expects the bids to be presented in March, which would put the start of construction towards the beginning of April.
