Larry Smith, who currently serves as the Emergency Management Coordinator for both Washington and Keokuk Counties, will no longer be shared as of this July. Washington County recently decided they wanted to have their own coordinator, so Smith will serve only Keokuk County. Keokuk County supervisors responded by increasing Smith’s hours from 20 hours per week to 24, currently his time is split 20 hours in each county each week. The officials added, due to its population, Keokuk County doesn’t need a full-time Emergency Management Coordinator, which is why Smith’s hours won’t increase substantially in spite of his increased availability. Smith will continue to serve as coordinator for both counties until July 1st, at which time the 28E sharing agreement will end and a new emergency management coordinator, yet to be named, will take over in Washington County.
