In a tightly contested matchup Thursday night at Tim Grady Gymnasium at Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman, the Lisbon boys basketball team bested Iowa Mennonite in the class 1A district nine championship game 64-59.

The game was nip and tuck through the first 10 minutes with IMS leading the majority of the way but never by more than four. Midway through the second quarter Iowa Mennonite found some breathing room with an 8-0 run on back to back three point goals from Nick Yutzy and a layup from Finny Lackender. Iowa Mennonite held a 35-31 lead at the half. In the second half Lisbon made a push, pulling within one but Yutzy responded for IMS scoring 12 of the team’s 14 points in the frame to keep the Lions at bay, including a three pointer at the buzzer of the quarter, giving IMS a 49-44 lead going to the final period. In the fourth, IMS continued to hold a slim lead up 56-53 with four minutes remaining but Lisbon make their charge, finishing the game on an 11-3 run to take the district title in a five point win.

IMS was led on the night by Nick Yutzy, in his final game in the maroon and black he finished with a game high 21 points. With the loss Iowa Mennonite says goodbye to five seniors, Nick Yutzy, Adrian Gonzales, Finny Lackender, Cole Yoder and Drake Brezina. IMS ends their season at 17-7. Lisbon improves to 17-7 and advances to the substate championship game Saturday at Washington to battle No. 9 New London for a bid to the state tournament.
