Two area boys basketball teams were able to advance to the semifinal round of the Class 1A District 9 basketball tournament Thursday Night in Lone Tree. As heard live on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com the Lone Tree Lions (1 hosted the Cedar Valley Christian Huskies (5-17), the HLV Warriors (4-19), and the Iowa Mennonite School (16-6) in a pair of Class 1A District 9 quarterfinal games.

The opening game featured the Iowa Mennonite School and Cedar Valley Christian. IMS outlasted the Huskies, 49-47.The lead changed hands 15 times and the game was tied five times. Mitchell Schmieder had a team-best 17 points while Cole Yoder added 12 points in the win. Cedar Valley Christian’s Kyle Gustafson recorded a game-high 31 points, including nine made three-pointers. The win improves IMS to 16-6 overall. They will host the Springville Orioles in Tuesday’s semifinal round. The Orioles defeated the Iowa Valley Tiger last night, 70-37.

The nightcap saw Lone Tree square off against the HLV Warriors. Lone Tree had four players score in double figures, helping the Lions to an 83-44 victory. Dawson Swails came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points. Niko Gosnell poured in 17, Michael Schmidt contributed 15, and Jovonte Squiers added 12. The victory sets up a rematch against the Lisbon Lions (14-7). Lisbon bested Lone Tree on their home floor on January 5, 54-51.
