Now is the time for area high school students to be planning what classes they’ll be taking next school year and registering for any courses at the Kirkwood Washington Regional Center. Director of the center, Tera Pickens says students should be working with their high school guidance counselors to determine if college level courses are the best avenue for their education and goals at this time. The Kirkwood Washington Regional Center offers a variety of academies for students on different education and career paths. Pickens says about half of their students are working toward obtaining a bachelor’s degree, so they enroll in the arts and sciences academies. There are also hands-on academies that translate to the world of work and have industry certifications, like welding, automotive, architectural, manufacturing and engineering.

The center is adding a new career academy in the fall – hospitality management. Pickens said this is a good fit for students who may want to go into the tourism field from managing a hotel or restaurant, or even pursuing culinary arts later.

The registration deadline is March 15th. Tuition for the high school students is covered and not charged to the student. For more information listen to the full Washington Page with Pickens.
