Mid-Prairie senior 182lb wrestler Visouth Peterschmidt opens the individual state wrestling tournament today at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Peterschmidt advanced to state for the first time in his career last Saturday at the district tournament in Fairfield, beating Collin Murphy of Washington in the semifinals by 15-1 major decision and pinning Austin Angle of Eddyville-Blakesburg in the title match.

Peterschmidt enters the tournament ranked No. 2 in the 182lb weight class in the latest poll from iawrestle.com. He has a 41-3 overall record. Peterschmidt will face Nick Foss of Harlan in round one with an overall record of 37-8. Foss is unranked. The winner of that match will take on the winner of Trevor Sprague of Saydel and Mason Carpenter of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

Other ranked wrestlers in the 182lb 2A bracket include: No. 1 Chase Shiltz of Creston-Orient-Macksburg, No. 3 Tanner Vermaas of Woodward-Granger, No. 6 Kyle Benson of Sergeant Bluff-Luton, No. 7 Luke Jenness of Sheldon, No. 8 Boone McDermott of Dubuque Wahlert and No. 9 Harrison Goebel of West Delaware. The opening round class 2A session of the tournament begins at 6PM tonight.
