Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk wrestler Visouth Peterschmidt was a winner in the first state tournament match of his career Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Peterschmidt, ranked No. 2 by iawrestle.com at 182lbs with a 41-3 record opened the tournament against unranked Nick Foss of Harlan. Peterschmidt scored a come from behind victory with a 6-4 decision to advance in the championship bracket. Peterschmidt will face off today in the state quarterfinals against Mason Carpenter of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. Carpenter is unranked with a 34-10 overall record. He scored an upset victory in the first round, taking a 6-5 decision over Trevor Sprague of Saydel. Peterschmidt and Carpenter will square off this afternoon at 2:30.
