The highest number of jobs in Washington County was recorded in 2016. There wre nearly 8,500 jobs in Washington County in 2016, not counting agriculture employment. Ed Raber, director of Washington Economic Development Group, WEDG, says many people believe the high point was around 2000, but 2016 was the highest number. He adds, the manufacturing sector has been for some time, and remains, the most volatile . Construction jobs have seen an increase in the number of jobs.
And in addition to more jobs, Raber says wages are increasing. In 2016, the average weekly wage of manufacturing was $685, compared to $825 in construction. He adds the Kirkwood Washington Regional Center aids in this by offering continuing education for new students and adult non-traditional students with classes that offer certifications, like welding.
