The body found last week in the Iowa River south of Hills Access has been identified as a 30-year-old woman. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office announced the body is that of Darling Yosseli Acosta Rivera of Iowa City. Rivera was recovered from the river February 16th and the cause of death has not been determined.

The investigation is ongoing and assistance from the public is requested. In a written statement, the sheriff’s office says, “There may be citizens in our community that may know Ms. Rivera, but may not want to talk to investigators out of fear of potential immigration enforcement issues. The Sheriff’s Office does not enforce immigration laws. That is the responsibility of federal authorities commonly known as ICE.” The local authorities add they are “not interested in a person’s immigration status but we are interested in talking to friends, family, and acquaintances of Darling Yosseli Acosta Rivera.”
