The high school athletic career of Washington senior Trey Van Weelden ended last weekend in Des Moines. Van Weelden, this week’s KCII Hedge Above Lawncare Athlete of the Week, wrestled in last Saturday’s Class 2A state title match at 152 pounds. He brought home silver, after losing by a 7-0 decision.

It was the third time Van Weelden qualified for the state wrestling tournament, earning a seventh place medal as a junior. He credited those past experiences at the state tournament for helping ease nerves entering this year’s event. His first match ended with a 10-2 major decision win against Woodward-Granger’s Austin Scharlau. A pair of decision victories against Osage’s Derek Fox (4-2) and Denver-Tripoli’s Cael Krueger (5-4) advanced Van Weelden to the title match.

Van Weelden told KCII Sports this week he is bypassing track this spring and is done with his athletic career at Washington. He also competed for the Demon football team this fall. His career wrestling record stands at 136-31.
