Four Washington Demon wrestlers will return to southeast Iowa with medals after the weekend. Five Demons grappled on the second day of the 2017 Iowa State Individual Wrestling tournament.

At 126lbs Washington’s Kyle Anderson, ranked No. 6 in the state, started his day with a 7-0 decision win over Anamosa’s Morgan Rowley. He clinched a spot in the final round by 7-6 decision over Brady Fritz of South Tama.Anderson will wrestle in the consolation round against No. 6 Gabe Ruepke of Chariton with a 53-5 record.

At 145lbs Washington’s Austin Hazelett, ranked No. 6 in the state, began with a 7-4 decision win over Winterset’s Justin Smith. He advanced to today’s medal round by defeating Tate Battani of Ballard by fall in 1:22. Hazelett will wrestle Saturday in the consolation round against 40-11 Matt Stines of Cherokee, Washington.

At 152lbs No. 6 Trey Van Weelden of Washington won a 4-2 decision against Osage’s Derek Fox in the championship quarterfinals. He clinched a spot in the state championship with a 5-4 decision in the semifinals Denver-Tripoli’s Cael Krueger. Van Weelden’s title match is No. 2 Isaac Judge of South Tama.

At 160lbs No. 6 Tristan Westphal-Edwards of Washington got day two started with a 4-2 decision victory over Ballard’s John Fulk. He fell to Lucas Roland of Prairie City-Monroe by 3-1 decision. He will wrestle 26-11 Kyle Sinnott of Albia on Saturday in the seventh-place match.

At 195lbs, Karlton Skubal was eliminated from the tournament after a 3-2 decision loss to Jackson Mikkelsen of Creston/OM. His season closed with a 31-6 record.
