The Washington archery teams were back in competition over the weekend. Shooters from Washington High School, middle school, and the Lincoln Elementary School competed in the annual Mount Vernon Tournament. The event featured archers from Albia, Alburnett, East Dubuque, Marion, Mount Vernon, North Linn, and Solon.

The Washington High School archery team finished in second place with a score of 3,296. Mount Vernon won the event with 3,334 points. Washington’s Samantha Mellinger posted the top high school girls result at 289 out of a possible 300 points. Mellinger recorded 20 bullseyes. Mitchell Driscoll documented Washington’s top boys result at 286 points and 17 bullseyes. It was the third best result in the high school boy’ division.

The Washington Middle School team placed second out of the four-team field with a mark of 3,247. Mount Vernon won the tournament title by 15 points. Sixth grade Allison Rees registered the top junior-high girls result at 290 points with 20 bullseyes. The Lincoln Elementary School finished third out of four teams with a score of 2,696. Miguel Torres Jr. posted the team’s highest score at 261 with eight bullseyes, ranking second in the elementary boy’s field.

All three Washington archery teams qualified for the 2017 Iowa National Archery in the School’s Program’s State Shoot next month in Des Moines. The event will be held March 3 and 4 on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Washington will host their final shoot of the season this weekend at the high school. Archers from Albia, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Mount Vernon, North Mahaska, and Solon will compete. First flights are set for 9 a.m.
