The competition week began near the tri-state border Monday for the Washington Demon basketball teams. As heard live on AM/FM KCII and KCIIRadio.com, the Demons traveled to Keokuk for a Southeast Conference doubleheader versus the Chiefs. Washington left Lee County with a doubleheader split.

The Keokuk Chiefs (12-5) won the girls contest, 65-33. Keokuk lead by 10 after the first quarter and extended it to 25 by halftime. Sarah Nacos led Washington with 10 points, while Tori Brush added nine. Makenzie Pezley scored a game-high 13 points to lead Keokuk. The loss drops Washington to 5-14 overall.

Washington overcame a 13-point first quarter deficit to win the boys’ contest, 55-45. The Demons were outscored 16-3 in the opening eight minutes; they outscored Keokuk 52-29 in the final three-quarters. Tanner Coleman led Washington with 13 points, while John Dillon and Mason Rich added eight points each. Damon Wolters scored a game-high 16 points for Keokuk. The win improves Washington to 6-11 overall.

The Washington Demon basketball teams return to the court tonight in Wellman against the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks in a battle of county rivals.
