All five wrestlers for the Washington Demons won a match Thursday in the Class 2A State Individual Wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Washington wrestled in the evening session of the tournament.

Trey Van Weelden (152; 28-5) was the lone Demon to win his opening match. He recorded a 13-0 major decision victory over Woodward-Granger’s Austin Scharlau. Van Weelden will meet Osage’s Derek Fox (28-5) in the quarterfinal round.

Washington has four wrestlers advancing in the consolation bracket, where they can still earn a spot on the podium with a third place finish. Kyle Anderson (120; 39-8) lost a 3-1 decision to Atlantic’s Chase McLaren (50-4). He won his wrestleback match against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ Connor Johnson by 4-1 decision. Austin Hazelett (145; 25-6) lost by 4-3 decision in his initial match against Cherokee’s Matt Stines (39-10). He came back with a 14-2 major decision victory over Pocahontas Area’s Clayton Reis (35-14) in the consolation quarterfinals. Tristin Westphal-Edwards (160) dropped his opening match by 5-1 decision to New Hampton’s Ryan Gorman (53-3). He answered with a pinfall victory at 5:47 in his wrestleback match against Humboldt’s Gus Arnold (34-8). Karlton Skubal (195; 31-5) was pinned in his first match against No. 1 Bryce Esmoil (39-2) at 5:47. He fought off elimination with a 47-second pinfall victory over Central Lyon/George-Little Rock’s Austin Winkel (30-10). They will be paired against a loser of a championship quarterfinal match today.
