Several area boys track teams opened their outdoor seasons in Washington Tuesday. The inaugural Steve Roth Relays, formerly the Washington Relays, was held at Case Field featuring 18 teams in three classes.

The Washington Demons were in Class A with Cedar Rapids Prairie, Fort Madison, Iowa City High, Mount Pleasant, and Xavier. The Demons finished in sixth place with 26 points. Mount Pleasant won the meet title with 172 points.

Washington’s best results came from relays. The Demons’ 800 sprint medley team of Sawyer Whisler, Kyle Dallmeyer, Tanner Murphy, and Ethan Hunt clocked the third best time at 1:43.18. Washington’s 4×200 squad of Mario Tapia, Murphy, Dallmeyer, and David Mares also took third place with a time of 1:39.5. The Demons’ shuttle hurdle relay crew of Caleb Bex, Tapia, Cade Hennigan, and Kyle Anderson placed fourth at 1:06.39. Washington’s distance medley group of Mares, Jameson Bell, Hunt, and Anderson placed fourth with a time of 4:06.28.

KCII area teams Columbus, WACO, Keota, and Highland were grouped in Class C. Columbus won the division title with 153 points. Top finishes included Columbus’ Tommie Pretz in the long jump competition with a mark of 18’10”. Abel Mena had a first-place finish for the Wildcats in the 400-meter dash, clocking his quarter mile in 55.01 seconds. Columbus’ 4×200 relay of Angel Hernandez, Carter Colby, Chance Colby, and Danny Fuentez topped the division with a time of 1:43.6.

WACO’s Cornell Hulme topped Class C in the 100-meter dash with a sprint of 11.55 seconds. Hulme also was first in the 200-meter dash at 23.75 seconds. Colton Horak posted another first-place finish for the Warriors in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.61 seconds. Horak won Class C’s 400-meter hurdles as well at 1:02.31. WACO’s 4×100 meter relay team of Calvin Battle, Ellijay McGohan, Horak and Hulme clocked the best time at 46.39 seconds.

Keota’s Turner Klein topped the field in the 3200-meter run, clocking his two-mile run in 11:04.38.

The meet also featured teams from Danville, Fairfield, West Burlington-Notre Dame, and Wapello, as well as junior varsity teams from Iowa City High and Washington.
