Dunbar Transitioning Successfully from Sheriff to Farmer

It’s been over two months since Jerry Dunbar retired from being the Washington County Sheriff, and he’s found farming life suits him. Dunbar moved into full-time farming, and though he says the work and stress are very different, it’s kept him no less busy, “The only responsibilities I have right now is to me and my family. I’m not responsible anymore for the safety of the community and all that. Now it’s more on inputs and money and stuff, financial stress. It’s amazing how much equipment and parts cost, and then just your general input of putting a crop in.”
Dunbar misses the people he worked with at the sheriff’s office, but says he still keeps in touch with them on a regular basis. Often times he has to remind himself that he doesn’t have to help solve cases anymore, though. As far as looking into the future, he didn’t rule out one day returning to public office, but says that would be several years from now. In the meantime, he’s enjoying spending more time with his granddaughter, and tending his land and livestock.
