In addition to several upperclassmen returning, the Washington boys’ golf team has a freshman who will compete for a spot on the varsity squad. Demon boys’ golf coach Mark Berhow said on last week’s PM Sports Page that newcomer Brock Sobaski will have a chance to be the team’s sixth golfer.

Last fall, Sobaski was named the Player of the Year for the Iowa Junior Tour’s boys 14-15 division. He competed in 16 tour events, producing 12 top 10 finishes. Sobaski’s best performances included a second place finish at the Southeast Iowa Junior at the Preserve on Rathbun Lake. He carded an 11 over 83,10 strokes behind the tournament champion, Kolby Shackelford.

Sobaski is one of four freshmen joining the high school golf team. The others are Brady Knutson, Caleb Tanner, and Drake Schluetter. Junior Blake Hartzler and sophomores Sam Hall and Ben Loy are out for high school golf for the first time.

The Washington boys’ golf team begins their season on April 8, hosting a Southeast Conference meet against the Mount Pleasant Panthers.
