Hostas are often used in outdoor landscaping, and with spring here horticulturists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach have shared some tips for using these plants. Spring is the best time to divide hostas, which should be done by digging up the entire clump when leaves begin to emerge. Divide the clump into sections with a sharp knife with each section having at least two or three points and a good portion of the crown and root system. Replant the clump immediately. Hostas perform best in partial to full shade with well-drained, fertile soils. They need a consistent supply of moisture throughout the growing season, so it’s advised to apply a two or three inch layer of wood chips or mulch around the plant.
