The leadership responsibilities of the Washington Demon girls’ golf team will be shouldered by three juniors this spring. The Demons are the two-time reigning Class 4A team state champions but graduated Deanna Peiffer and Brenna Burlingame last May. Washington girls’ golf coach Len Kull says there are no seniors out for golf, leaving a trio of third-year high school students in charge of leading the squad. Those players are Sarah Nacos, Megan Strabala, and Allison Vogel.

Nacos returns as the back-to-back Class 4A state individual champion. She defended her title with a 36-hole performance of 12 over 154 at Ames’ Coldwater Golf Links Course. Her score was nine strokes better than the rest of the field. Strabala had Washington’s third best score in last year’ state tournament and tied for 25th place with a two-day score of 26 over 195. Vogel finished in 47th place with an 80 over 222.

Sophomore Carly Burlingame rounds out Washington’s returning golfers. She carded the 53rd best performance at state with a two-day score of 103 over 245. Two freshmen have joined the squad this spring: Emily Waite and Kaitlyn Mitchell.

The Washington Demon girls’ golf team begins their season in Keokuk on April 6, competing in a tournament at Elks Golf Course.
