Iowa Mennonite School student Rubye Ney has been recognized for her essay writing skills, and has qualified for the Mennonite Central Committee’s national essay contest. Ney, a sophomore, entered an essay about immigration, and placed second at the regional level of the contest, which earned her a $75 prize and sent her essay to the national level. The grand prize she will be vying for in the national competition is $1,000, and there will also be three honorable mention award winners who will receive $500.
The essay contest is a yearly event held by the MCC, and asks high school aged students to submit a four to six page essay on one of three topics. The topics to pick from this year were gun violence in the United States, Colombia, or immigration. The contest is open to Mennonite, Brethren in Christ, and other Anabaptist youth of high school age in the United States and Puerto Rico. Judging for the national competition is currently underway, and the winners will be announced March 30th.
