Several first-place finishes helped the Lone Tree Lions boys track team win their first outdoor competition of the season Monday. The Ruritan Relays hosted by Pekin Community Schools featured 10 teams broken into two classes. Lone Tree was in Class B with English Valleys, Moravia, Tri-County, Twin Cedars, and WACO. The Lions ran away with the team title with 191 points. Lone Tree placed first in nine events, including two relays.

The Lions’ 4×100 meter team of Drake Hotz, Jovonte Squiers, Avery Knock and Niko Gosnell won the event by one second with a time of 46.32 seconds. Lone Tree’s 800 sprint medley crew of Knock, Gosnell, Drake Hotz and Brock Smith crossed the finish line in 1:41.55, nearly one second faster than the field.

Squiers and Gosnell won two individual events each. Squiers made it to the finish line first in the 400-meter dash with a quarter-mile time of 57.28 seconds. He also took gold in the long jump with a leap of 20’9″. Gosnell placed first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.15 seconds. He won the high jump competition as well with a mark of 6’4″.

Hotz was first across the finish line in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.61 seconds. Smith topped the 800-meter run with a result of 2:17.74. Finally, Ross Swinton posted the best 3200 meter run at the meet with a two-mile time 11:49.33.

The Lone Tree boys track team returns to competition Tuesday in the Dave Aamodt Relays hosted by Mediapolis High School.
