The varsity track career of Washington freshman Hannah Anderson began with a pair of top-two finishes Thursday. The Washington girls’ track team opened their season at Cornell College in the 10th annual Demon Indoor Meet.

Anderson had Washington’s only first-place finish, she did that in the girls long jump event. Her leap of 16’3.5″ was 2.25 inches farther than the rest of the field. She posted a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash. Her time of 8.14 seconds was bested only by Iowa City West’s Valerie Welch by one-tenth of a second.

Washington had multiple top 10 performances, including three relays. The Demons’ 4×400 meter relay of Jenah Greiner, Leah Marek, Cierra Miller, and Meredith Raber finished sixth with a time of 4:43.4. The Demons’ 4×800 meter relay team of Isabel Bailey, Ashley Telleen, Raber, and Claire Horak clocked the eighth best time at 11:10.88. The distance medley squad of Makenzi Marek, Anderson, Telleen, and Horak clocked a time of 4:48.4, the seventh best result. Finally, Bailey tied for eighth place in the 400-meter dash. Her mark of 1:07.99 was the same as Linn-Mar’s Katelyn Eilders.

Athletes from Anamosa, Bettendorf, Carlisle, Cedar Falls, Central Lee, Clear Creek Amana, Columbus Community, Davenport Central, Davenport North, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Highland, Iowa City High, Iowa City, Iowa City Regina, Iowa City West, Keokuk, Linn-Mar, Mount Pleasant, Mount Vernon, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Solon, West Burlington, Williamsburg, and Xavier competed in the event.

The Washington girls’ track team will wrap up their indoor season next Saturday at the Central College Indoor High School Track and Field Meet. First events are set to commence at 10 a.m. in Pella.
