The Washington Demon boys soccer team suffered their first defeat of the season Monday, falling at home to the Keokuk Chiefs in their Southeast Conference opener, 3-0.

Difficult weather conditions combined with strong starts from both sides defenses left the match a scoreless tie at the break. The Demon defensive effort was led by goalkeeper Thomas Zimmer, who finished the game with 11 saves and backs Kyle Anderson and Owen Horak.

The Chiefs were able to break through the Demon defense with physical play and score the games first goal. Trailing 1-0 Washington had to take some chances offensively to try to find the equalizer. The Chiefs took advantage of the Demons late to add two insurance goals in the final five minutes.

Despite the fact that they did not find the scoreboard, the Demons finished the night with six shots on goal, including a pair from John Dillon. With the loss, Washington is now 1-1 on the year and is next in action tonight when they host the Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union Wildcats. The Wildcats, a state tournament team in class 1A a year ago, are ranked No. 3 to begin the season.
