A few streets in Kalona are becoming excessively cracked according the City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh, which is why the city is planning some repair work for the summer. Sixth Street and 14th Street are the primary culprits, and the city will bridge most gaps in the streets using a crack seal. However, some spots may need a bit more help, as Schlabaugh explains, “The council looked at some estimates and directed staff to do a little bit more research about possibly doing an overlay on a couple of the areas, improve them one step further than just the crack seal. So they’ll take some action on it probably at the next council meeting.” The crack sealing project would be part of the city’s capital improvements plan, so any work done with it wouldn’t begin until the new fiscal year starts on July 1st. Schlabaugh says they still want to lay the foundation of the project, so that it can be ready to go as soon as the new budget takes effect.
