Preventing pill abuse and theft by getting rid of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs is the goal of an event in Washington being held Saturday. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington Police Department and Drug Enforcement Administration, in partnership with the Washington County SAFE Coalition, will give the public its 13th opportunity in seven years to safely dispose of prescription drugs. The free, anonymous drop off is being held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington. Only pills and patches will be accepted, no liquids, needles or sharps. At the October event in Washington, officials took in 74.5 pounds of pills.

The event helps prevent drug abuse, and gives people a safe place to dispose of drugs, as flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose safety and health hazards. There’s also a permanent drop box at the Washington County Jail.
