National Library Week is April 9th through the 15th, and libraries across the country are using this week to celebrate the contributions of libraries, library workers, and promoting library use and support.

Wellman-Scofield Library director Carol Wilkins explains the library’s efforts this week. “The American Libraries Association, their theme is Libraries Transform, so it’s not just about what you have in the library it’s also what you offer, because people aren’t checking out as many books, they have technology and handheld devices. So we’re going through and talking about all the services we offer and the resources we offer online when you’re not in the library.”

Wellman-Scofield Library has invited classes from Wellman Elementary School. Wilkins talks about some of the planned activities for the classes, “For the first and second graders we are doing a book buffet. I have pulled several different genres of books and they’re going to sit in a circle in several groups and they’re going to get so many minutes to look at each book and then we’ll talk about their favorites and which ones they’d like to read more of and see if they recognize the types of books.”

Kalona Library is asking patrons to tell them why they love libraries, even in the form of a poem. Kalona Library Director Anne Skaden said they will also have various quotes about libraries displayed around the library.
