The Kalona City Council recently considered Safe Routes contracts for installation of numerous sidewalks that would provide safer travel to the elementary and middle schools. State bids came in at approximately $183,000. There will be a quick public forum on the project at the April 17th meeting. Schlabaugh explains, “It’s a great project. It’s kind of been a long time in the making. We’re ready to go with it. We look forward to getting everything put in. Providing a little bit safer access for kids to link up on the north end of town down 6th Street to connect some of our mobile homes to provide a little bit better access.”

Streets that stretch east and west will also receive improvements to gain better and safer access to and from both the elementary school and middle school.
