Mid-Prairie Fund for Academic Excellence Finishes First Year, Looks to Expand

Mid-Prairie High School teacher Sara Puttman gave a presentation on her endowment funded 3D pens for Calculus at the school board meeting April 24. This is one of the four projects that were funded for the Fund of Academic Excellence’s pilot program.

The first year pilot program of the Fund for Academic Excellence is almost over, and the fund’s steering committee is looking forward to expanding the program from Mid- Prairie High School to the entire school district.

Kamp Kaleidoscope

Title: Kamp Kaleidoscope
Description: Kamp Kaleidoscope is a one day camp designed to provide support and education to grieving school aged students and to help them understand more about grief and to normalize their feelings in a caring, supportive atmosphere. There will be a variety of activities throughout the day including small groups, music, memory making, and a closing ceremony that will include family members. Kamp Kaleidoscope will be facilitated by Iowa City Hospice bereavement counselors and trained volunteers. The camp will be held on Saturday, June 10th, from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at River Community Church, 3001 Muscatine Ave., Iowa City. Registration is required. Manure Applicator Program

Title: Manure Applicator Program

Description: Washington County Extension will reshow both the Commercial and Confinement Manure Applicator Programs on Friday, May 5, for those that were unable to attend a workshop. These programs are shown free of charge on the first Friday of each month in Washington. Applicators that need to schedule a reshow at any other time will be charged a $10 fee per person. The Commercial Manure Program will be shown at 8:30 am and the Confinement Manure Program will be shown at 1:30 pm at the Washington County Extension Office. Anyone not able to attend training or those who prefer to retest should schedule an appointment with their DNR field office to take the certification exam. Please contact the Washington County Extension Office at 319-653-4811 with any questions.

Prescription Drug Drop-Off

Description: On Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA),will give the public its opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.  Bring your pills for disposal to the United Presbyterian Church parking lot, at 209 E Main St in Washington.  (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.)  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Description: Langwood Adventure Day is Saturday, June 3rd from 8:00am til 1:00pm at Landwood Education Center. This free family event for youth ages 6 and up. Activity stations will be open from 8:00am until noon. A free lunch and raffle will take place from Noon until 1:00pm. Greenhorn Grazing

Description: Southeast Iowa producers who want to conserve natural resources while being able to optimize their forage and livestock production are invited to attend the 2017 Greenhorn Grazing series in Mount Pleasant. Workshops are scheduled for May 23rd, June 6th, 14th, 20th, and August 22nd. Meetings start at 5:00pm at the ISU Extension and Outreach Henry County office in Mount Pleasant. Cost is $60 for all the sessions. Participants are urged to attend all sessions, but fees for individual sessions are available upon request. The fee includes a meal and educational materials for each session.Producers are asked to register by May 19 by calling the ISU Extension and Outreach Henry County office at 319-385-8126
