With prom season approaching, getting the perfect dress, the right tux or finding a dinner reservation may seem like the most important part of the evening but safety needs to be at the top of the list for kids and parents.

Washington Country Sheriff Jared Schneider talks about several important categories when it comes to the big night, including driving safety, seat belt use, distracted driving, fatigued driving, responsibility, and planning. Schneider says that one way parents and kids can help ensure a safe time is to plan ahead with a conversation “I think it’s very important for parents to have a conversation with their child before they head out for the night. One of the things that parents need to keep in mind is to remind your child you would rather have that phone call at 2 a.m. than have them make a decision that affects the rest of their life. If they are ever in a situation that involves drinking, drugs or something else they are uncomfortable with, they can make a phone call to mom and dad that helps them get out of that situation and stay safe”.

Schneider also spoke about the Washington County Sheriff’s Department and their role in helping to make prom a fun and safe experience for those around southeast Iowa. “Number one we want kids to enjoy their special evening. Number two and most important we want to make sure that the kids make it home safely.”

Washington’s prom is scheduled for May 6th. Mid-Prairie will host their prom April 22nd.
