April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and the number of sexual assault reports in Washington County have decreased in recent years, but may have an uptick in 2017. Sheriff Jared Schneider says in 2014 the sheriff’s office received 20 reports of sexual assault. The numbers dipped to 15 in 2015 and 13 in 2016, but so far this year Schneider says there have been eight reports, which could bring 2017 numbers up to be on par with 2014. These numbers don’t represent the number of actual charges. Schneider says these cases can range from unfounded to somebody being charged. To put it in perspective Schneider also points out that 68% of sexual assault cases go unreported. Schneider recommends for those who have been sexually assaulted, to contact the sheriff dispatch office, or if they aren’t comfortable to contact the Rape Victim Advocacy Program, the RVAP Crisis Line is 319-335-6000, or the Iowa Sexual Abuse Hotline at 800-284-7821.
